At least 18,059 individuals, which include 795 children affected by HIV/AIDS, are currently undergoing treatment in Borno State, as disclosed by Hajiya Falmata Alhaji-Bukar, the Executive Secretary of Borno State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS (BOSACA), during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri.

Alhaji-Bukar highlighted the rising rate of HIV/AIDS in Borno and emphasized the agency’s commitment to intensifying awareness campaigns, particularly in rural areas, aligning with this year’s theme: “Let Communities Lead”.

She noted that while urban residents were more informed about managing HIV/AIDS, rural communities lacked adequate information. In response, she mentioned ongoing plans to extend enlightenment programs to rural areas, starting with Mafa LGA after the day’s event in Maiduguri. Alhaji-Bukar emphasized the mobilization of the Local Action Committee on AIDs (LACA) to bolster grassroots efforts.

The executive secretary stressed the importance of knowing one’s HIV status as a crucial step in combating the pandemic. She also mentioned collaborative efforts between the agency, Ministry of Health, and partners to ensure immediate treatment for individuals testing positive for HIV/AIDS.

Alhaji-Bukar pointed out challenges faced in the fight against HIV/AIDS, such as insecurity in areas affected by insurgency and a shortage of staff. She called on the Ministry of Health to address the staff shortage issue.

Additionally, Mamman Musa, a member of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Borno, appealed for increased support and funding for the campaign. He urged the government to provide an office for their operations and an ambulance to assist members experiencing difficulty accessing treatment due to drug side effects.
