The Kwara State Police Command has reported the rescue of a man accused of attempting to kidnap a child in Ilorin, the state capital. The suspect was saved from a violent mob by police officers on Friday.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed that the individual—an unidentified adult male—was detained on suspicion of child abduction.
“The Kwara State Police Command is aware of a video circulating on social media showing a young man alleged to have attempted to kidnap a child in Ilorin,” the statement said.
According to the release, the incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. on May 16, 2025. A joint patrol team comprising police officers and local vigilante members apprehended the suspect, who claimed to be from Osun State.
Authorities intervened just as the mob was about to carry out a lynching. The man was taken into custody, and an investigation is currently underway to verify the claims and identify any other individuals who may be linked to the case.
The police also noted that no formal complaint has yet been made at the command headquarters, and they urged anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
The command emphasized its opposition to mob justice, reminding the public that such actions are illegal and could lead to wrongful punishment.
“Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station instead of taking the law into their own hands,” the statement concluded.
