Veteran actor Yemi Solade explains why he stopped attending church since 2013, sharing how religious obligations interfered with his career and peace of mind.

Veteran Nollywood actor, Yemi Solade, has shared the reasons behind his decision to stop going to church, a choice he made over a decade ago.

Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, Solade explained that his experience in church became more of a burden than a source of spiritual growth. According to him, the turning point came in 2013 after a particular incident.

Recounting the experience, he said:

“If you see me in a church, it’s either for a film shoot or some other work-related reason. Back in 2013, my wife and I attended service, and the pastor instructed me to tell producers not to call me for jobs on Sundays. That didn’t sit well with me because the same work is what sustains me and also allows me to give to the church.”

The actor stressed that his decision has not negatively affected his life. Instead, he believes he has enjoyed more peace and balance since stepping away from regular church activities.

“There’s this notion that one’s life will fall apart without church attendance. For me, it’s the opposite—I’ve found peace and stability. When I used to go, I was constantly overwhelmed with messages and obligations.”

Solade also criticized the time-consuming commitments that came with church membership, noting that they interfered with his career and personal time.

“If you are always tied to committees and activities, when will you have time to work?” he asked.

His comments have since stirred discussions online, with many Nigerians weighing in on the balance between religious obligations and personal freedom.
