Nigerian singer Naira Marley has urged young people in the country to steer clear of depending on sports betting as a livelihood.
In a post on his official X account on Sunday, which was reported by PUNCH Online on Monday, the artist stressed that betting is unpredictable and can become harmful if it turns into a habit. He cautioned that it should not be seen as a legitimate source of income.
According to him, gambling addiction is an increasing problem among Nigerian youths, especially at a time of widespread unemployment and economic hardship. “Football bet no be work bro. Please stop before they finish you. You are far too smart to be the only thing standing in your way,” he wrote.
Sports betting has become increasingly popular among young Nigerians, driven by the easy availability of smartphones, internet access, and the country’s deep passion for football. Many, facing limited opportunities, view betting as a way to make quick money.
However, the trend has raised concerns about addiction, financial instability, and mental health problems. Reports of young people falling into debt or turning to crime to cover gambling losses are becoming more frequent. Despite repeated warnings from health professionals and religious leaders, the betting industry in Nigeria continues to grow through aggressive marketing and celebrity endorsements.
