The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended a man, Lawal Faruq, for allegedly setting his former girlfriend, Omolola Hassan, ablaze inside a military barracks in Ibadan.
The tragic event reportedly occurred earlier in the week following the breakdown of their relationship.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama shared details of the case on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the suspect confessed he and the victim had sworn an oath never to separate.
According to Makama, Faruq became enraged after Hassan ended the relationship. He allegedly poured petrol on her and set her on fire in a fit of anger.
Witnesses said soldiers within the barracks quickly intervened, extinguished the flames, and rushed the woman to Yawiri Hospital in Akobo for emergency care.
The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for Oyo State, Adewale Osifeso, said the command had begun a full investigation into the case.
“Investigation is ongoing,” Osifeso stated.
The victim is said to be receiving medical treatment, while authorities work to uncover more details surrounding the violent attack.
