A Magistrate Court in Kano has ordered two well-known TikTok content creators, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, to marry within 60 days after they appeared in viral videos deemed “indecent” and contrary to the moral and religious standards of the state.
The ruling, delivered on Monday by Magistrate Halima Wali, followed their arraignment before the court on allegations of producing and sharing videos that contained romantic gestures considered “immoral” by the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board.
In her judgment, Magistrate Wali instructed the Kano State Hisbah Board to oversee the conduct of the marriage within the specified period, warning that failure to comply would amount to contempt of court. She also directed the Chairman of the Films and Video Censorship Board to supervise the enforcement of the order.
The two content creators were earlier arrested and charged for breaching the state’s censorship regulations, which prohibit the creation and circulation of sexually suggestive or obscene material.
Earlier this month, Mai Wushirya was remanded in a correctional facility after clips of him and Basira Yar Guda went viral, prompting backlash from conservative and religious groups in the state.
According to the Censorship Board, the videos violated Kano’s public morality laws and “undermined the cultural and Islamic values” upheld by society.
