The Lagos State Government has introduced a new regulation mandating that any man who impregnates a woman outside wedlock must take full responsibility for her welfare throughout the pregnancy.
According to Section 277 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, men who abandon women they impregnate are legally required to provide food, accommodation, and medical care until the child is born. Failure to fulfill these responsibilities could result in a fine of up to ₦45,000, in addition to covering all maternity-related expenses.
Furthermore, if a court order is issued compelling the man to assume responsibility and he fails to comply, additional legal actions may follow.
Purpose of the Law
This law was enacted to protect women who are often left to suffer alone during pregnancy after being abandoned by their partners. The Lagos State Government aims to curb the growing number of cases where men evade responsibility after impregnating women.
At present, this regulation applies only within Lagos State.

Women affected by such situations can report to the following authorities for assistance:

The new law has stirred mixed reactions among Lagos residents. While some commend the government for promoting accountability and protecting women, others question its fairness and practicality.
Several citizens have expressed concern about false pregnancy claims and the absence of mandatory DNA testing before prosecuting accused men. Others argue that the law should also address other pressing social issues like street harassment and criminal gangs.
Despite the differing opinions, the law underscores Lagos State’s determination to promote responsibility and ensure justice for pregnant women abandoned by their partners.
