The Bishop Emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Most Reverend Julius Adelakun, has passed away at the age of 91.
His death was confirmed in a statement released on Saturday by the current Bishop of the Oyo Diocese, Most Reverend Emmanuel Badejo, who noted that Adelakun died on Friday.
Adelakun served as Bishop of Oyo for an impressive 36 years — from April 13, 1973, until his retirement on November 4, 2009.
In his tribute, Bishop Badejo described the late cleric as a man who lived “a full and impactful life,” adding that his service and witness “touched countless lives.” He urged members of the Catholic community in Oyo to pray for the peaceful repose of Adelakun’s soul, noting that funeral details would be announced later.
“He faithfully guided the Diocese of Oyo for decades, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of devotion to God, the Church, and humanity,” Badejo said.
Born on November 4, 1934, Julius Adelakun was ordained a Catholic priest on June 27, 1965, and became a bishop on February 11, 1973.
Funeral arrangements will be made public in due course.
