A suspected armed robber has been apprehended by the Kebbi State Police Command, while three alleged accomplices remain on the run after an attack in Gwandu Local Government Area.
The suspect was arrested following an investigation launched after a 32-year-old man, identified as Umar Mode from Dalijan village, was assaulted and robbed along the Gwandu–Birnin Kebbi highway on October 22, 2025.
According to a statement from the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar, the victim was ambushed by a gang armed with dangerous weapons. The attackers inflicted severe head injuries before escaping with his unregistered red Boxer motorcycle and Tecno phone.
Acting on intelligence, a joint team of police officers and vigilantes led by the Divisional Police Officer of Gwandu successfully arrested 22-year-old Basiru Lawali from Bancho village in Shagari LGA of Sokoto State. An unregistered TVS motorcycle was recovered during the operation.
Abubakar noted that the suspect confessed and identified three individuals — Hassan, Umaru and Salihu — as his accomplices. The group allegedly held meetings at Dodoru market to coordinate their criminal activities.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Birnin Kebbi for further action. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to locate and arrest the remaining suspects.
Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Sani, praised the officers involved and urged continuous patrols, especially along the Gwandu–Birnin Kebbi corridor.
The command has recently made similar breakthroughs, including arrests and recovery of motorcycles linked to criminal operations. Cases in recent months also include uncovering motorcycle supplies meant for bandits and retrieving abandoned motorbikes connected to vandalism in Ribah District.
