The Russian government has announced that it is observing developments in Nigeria following remarks by United States President Donald Trump suggesting possible American military intervention in the country.

During a press briefing in Moscow on Friday, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, stated that the Kremlin is “closely monitoring the situation” and urged all involved parties to adhere strictly to international legal standards.

Her statement came in response to a question from Anadolu Agency about Trump’s declaration on November 1, where he revealed that he had instructed the Pentagon to prepare “options for possible military measures” against terrorist groups in Nigeria. Trump said the move was intended to protect Christian communities allegedly under threat.

Zakharova emphasized that Washington must act responsibly and respect global diplomatic norms. “We are closely following this issue and call on all sides to comply with international law,” she reiterated.

Trump had earlier posted on his Truth Social platform that Christianity in Nigeria faced an “existential threat” from extremist elements. He claimed that “thousands of Christians are being killed” and described Nigeria as a “country of particular concern.”

He added that the U.S. “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening,” pledging his administration’s readiness to defend Christian populations worldwide. Trump also called on key members of Congress, including Congressman Moore and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole, to investigate the situation and report back to him.

In response, the Nigerian government dismissed Trump’s allegations. President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed that Nigeria guarantees freedom of religion and protects the rights of citizens of all faiths.
