The succession race for the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland has intensified following the formal declaration of Fuji icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, K1 De Ultimate, who has officially submitted his interest in occupying the revered stool.
K1, aged 67, enters the contest with a blend of cultural prominence, national influence, and strong political ties. His letter dated December 3, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, stated that his intention aligns with Ijebu customary practices and the Ogun State Chieftaincy Laws.
He affirmed his eligibility by citing his ancestry.
According to him, he is a direct descendant of the Oba Jadiara lineage under the Fusengbuwa Ruling House and therefore qualified to be considered for the throne.
K1 also emphasised his long-standing contributions to Ijebuland and Yoruba heritage. He highlighted over 50 years of promoting Ijebu culture through his music, performances, and public engagements, which he believes have enhanced the visibility of Ijebu and Yoruba identity across Nigeria and beyond.
He noted several honours he has received over the years, including his installation as Mayegun of Yorubaland in 2020, the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger in 2022, and his traditional titles in Ijebu conferred by the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Adetona.
His declaration followed a request from the Ijebu-Ode Local Government directing the Fusengbuwa Ruling House to begin the nomination process. The ruling house has been instructed to submit its candidate list within 14 days in line with Ijebu tradition and rotational guidelines.
Other contenders for the stool include a younger prince, Olaseni Ottun, from the Adeberu lineage, and Otunba Babatunde Alatise, a respected engineer and businessman.
The selection process is expected to proceed according to established customs, with stakeholders across Ijebuland watching the outcome closely.
