An unexpected moment involving two of Oyo State’s foremost traditional rulers has stirred public discussion following an incident at the 2026 Inter-Faith Gathering held in Ibadan.
According to eyewitness accounts, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, was seemingly ignored by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abdulrashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja, during the event. Observers claimed that the Alaafin extended a handshake, but the gesture was not acknowledged.
Instead, the Olubadan reportedly greeted Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and other prominent guests before proceeding to his seat, a move that drew attention and left many attendees visibly surprised.
The moment has since generated widespread reactions, with opinions divided over its meaning. While some critics view the incident as a sign of underlying tensions within the traditional leadership structure, others have urged restraint, calling for dialogue and mutual respect among royal institutions.
As discussions continue, the episode has raised fresh questions about relationships and protocol within Oyo State’s traditional hierarchy, with many hoping the matter will be addressed calmly to preserve unity and cultural dignity.
