A medical doctor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir, who was abducted in Edo State, has regained his freedom after his family paid a ransom of ₦50 million to his captors.

Dr. Tahir was kidnapped alongside his younger brother on January 2, 2026, at their residence on City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, while they were opening the gate to their compound. Days later, on January 5, the body of his younger brother was discovered near Orley River along the same road. He was reportedly killed by the kidnappers.

Speaking in a telephone interview on Thursday, the victims’ father disclosed that the ransom was paid in two instalments—₦20 million and ₦30 million—before his son was released on Wednesday evening at about 8:00 p.m.

According to him, raising the money required the collective efforts of family members, support from non-governmental organisations, friends, and other well-wishers. He also revealed that Dr. Tahir sustained a minor gunshot injury during the ordeal, as a bullet grazed his leg. In addition, one of the kidnappers was reportedly injured after being confronted by vigilantes and local hunters prior to the doctor’s release.

“My son has finally been released after we paid ₦50 million. While I am grateful that he is alive, our family is still grieving the loss of another son,” the father said. “He was grazed by a bullet and is currently receiving medical treatment.”

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the development. The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, stated in a telephone conversation that the doctor had indeed been released.

“I can confirm that the abducted doctor has regained his freedom,” she said.
