Proceedings have continued at a Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, in the case involving Adeniyi Kayode, the driver accused in the road accident that led to the deaths of two aides of former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.
Kayode, 46, was brought before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun on January 2 to answer four charges related to dangerous, reckless, and negligent driving.
According to court records, the defendant is facing a count of dangerous driving causing death, an offence under Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State. He is also charged under Section 6(1) of the same Act for reckless and negligent driving.
Other allegations include driving without proper care and attention, resulting in bodily injury and damage to property, contrary to Section 7(1) of the Act, as well as driving without a valid national driver’s licence, an offence under Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act.
The court granted the accused bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties required to meet the bail conditions.
The charges arose from a fatal crash that occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The Lexus SUV driven by Kayode reportedly rammed into a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, and his personal trainer and close associate, Latif Ayodele.
Anthony Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries during the incident and were treated at a hospital before the boxer was discharged to continue his recovery at home.
In the aftermath of the crash, Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos as preparations were made to transport the bodies of the deceased to the United Kingdom.
Funeral prayers for Ghami and Ayodele were held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque, after which they were buried at Hendon Cemetery. Anthony Joshua attended the burial ceremony, visibly emotional, as tributes poured in from members of the international boxing community.
The matter has been adjourned to a later date for continuation of trial.
