Plans for the burial of late gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, widely known as Omije Ojumi, have been suspended due to unresolved family matters.

The development was made public on Saturday by fellow gospel artiste Lanre Alewilese through a post on his Instagram page. He announced that all burial arrangements earlier put together by the Burial Planning Committee had been halted.

According to Alewilese, the decision followed issues arising within the singer’s family, making it necessary to suspend the planned programmes. He expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the sudden change.

Before the suspension, several burial activities had been scheduled to take place in Lagos. These included a service of songs, candlelight procession and tribute night fixed for Tuesday, January 20, at the LTV 8 Ground in Ikeja. A private burial for family members and close associates was also planned for Wednesday, January 21.

In a follow-up video message delivered in Yoruba, Alewilese clarified that the decision was not taken by him personally. He explained that the family and the burial committee jointly agreed to place all arrangements on hold.

He added that he was only directed to inform the public about the situation, stressing that the previously announced events would remain suspended until the family reaches a final decision. According to him, Nigerians would be duly updated once new arrangements are concluded.

Bunmi Akinnaanu passed away on January 12, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos. Her death was earlier announced by gospel singer Ayo Melody in a statement shared on Instagram on behalf of the family.

Fondly called Omije Ojumi after her popular gospel song, Akinnaanu began her music journey at a young age. She later left a career in banking to fully pursue gospel music.

In October 2025, a video circulated online showing the singer receiving prayers during a church service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan over an undisclosed illness. However, no official statement has linked the ailment to the cause of her death.

The family is expected to announce fresh burial plans at a later date.
