Several passengers were injured on Monday morning after a train operating along the Abuja–Kaduna railway line experienced a derailment that disrupted the journey.
The train, which departed from Kaduna and was headed to Abuja, was forced to stop before reaching its destination following the incident on the busy rail corridor connecting the Federal Capital Territory with Kaduna State.
A source within the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), who spoke anonymously because he was not authorised to comment publicly, confirmed that the disruption occurred during the trip.
Passengers on board said the situation unfolded suddenly, causing panic inside the train as it came to an abrupt halt.
Some travellers reported hearing a loud bang moments before the train jerked violently, throwing several passengers off their seats and creating confusion inside the coaches.
According to eyewitnesses, the Abuja-bound train was believed to have collided with another train along the route, prompting a temporary suspension of operations while the situation was assessed.
Sources said a number of passengers suffered injuries, including cuts and bruises, after being tossed against seats and metal parts inside the train compartments.
One passenger, Sada Malumfashi, who shared his experience on X shortly after leaving the train, described the frightening moment. He said the sudden jolt caught many people unprepared.
Malumfashi explained that the train remained stationary for about 30 minutes before it eventually resumed the journey slowly toward Kubwa, an area on the outskirts of Abuja.
He added that passengers received no immediate communication from the Nigerian Railway Corporation regarding the incident.
When contacted, NRC spokesperson Callistus Unyimadu confirmed that the incident had occurred and stated that an official statement would be released.
