Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a suspected fake preacher and six others following a raid on a location allegedly used as a criminal hideout disguised as a church in Ndiya Mfia village, Ikono Local Government Area.
According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, the operation was carried out early in the morning after intelligence reports indicated that criminal elements were operating from the premises.
During the raid, police recovered several items, including two locally made double-barrel guns, spent cartridges, motorcycles, generators, mobile phones, and a police insignia, among other materials.
Those arrested include Brain Ebeka, identified as a preacher, alongside Kenneth Ezekiel, Dickson Ndueso, Abang Rowland, Esther Elijah Okon, Joy Elijah Okon, and another female suspect bearing a similar name.
Preliminary findings suggest that the location was being used as a cover for illegal activities, raising concerns about the misuse of religious settings for criminal operations.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, has ordered a full investigation into the incident and directed officers to intensify efforts to apprehend other suspects who may still be at large.
The police also warned that individuals using any form of disguise, including religious platforms, to carry out unlawful acts will face strict legal consequences. Residents were urged to remain vigilant and support law enforcement agencies by providing useful information to help maintain security in the state.
