Former President Olusegun Obasanjo Shares Insights on Yoruba Tradition
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo made intriguing remarks during the commissioning of the Iseyin campus of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso. He noted that kings typically bow down for him in private encounters, while he prostrates to them in public.
Obasanjo, who was invited as a special guest of honor by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for the event, created a memorable moment when he compelled the traditional rulers in attendance, primarily from the Oke-Ogun geo-political zone of the state, to stand up and sit down again as a sign of respect.
The former president emphasized the significance of respect for age and position in Yoruba culture. He conveyed, “In Yoruba land, we respect two things: age and position. The governor’s position is superior to that of any king. When I was president, I prostrated for kings openly. But indoors, the king would bow down for me. Let us respect our culture.”
Obasanjo’s comments shed light on the nuances of Yoruba traditions and the intricacies of respect and hierarchy within the culture.
