Tragic Suicide by 17-Year-Old Student in Benue State, While Bandits Abduct University Students in Zamfara

In a tragic incident, a 17-year-old student from Government Secondary School in Gboko, Benue State, identified as Terhemba Tyochivir, took his own life on Thursday. The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, confirmed the incident, which was reported at the E Division Police Station in Makurdi.

Details surrounding the incident remained limited, and Anene clarified that the boy’s parents found him and rushed him to Bishop Murray Hospital in Makurdi, where doctors confirmed his unfortunate demise. Attempts to reach the father of the deceased, Kula Tyochivir, were unsuccessful as he preferred to speak at a later time.

In a separate incident, armed bandits targeted the Federal University of Gusau in Zamfara State during the early hours of Friday, abducting an unspecified number of students. The bandits, in a large group, invaded the Sabon-Gida community in the Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

A resident of Sabon-Gida, Nazeer Sabon-Gida, revealed that the gunmen arrived around 3 a.m. and began shooting indiscriminately. The attackers targeted three student hostels, abducting all the students present. The exact number of kidnapped students remains uncertain due to the chaotic situation.

According to another source, the bandits engaged in a fierce gun battle with Nigerian Army troops but still managed to escape with the abducted victims. The bandits employed a tactic where one group would move with the kidnapped victims, while another group stayed behind to engage the military.

It’s worth noting that earlier in June, students at the Federal University of Gusau had protested against the consistent kidnapping of their peers in Sabon-Gida and Damba. Sabon-Gida is located near the main campus of the university, approximately 20 km from the state capital, Gusau.
