In a tragic and heart-wrenching incident, a 45-year-old woman, Oluchukwu Nwosu, was arrested for reportedly selling her three-month-old grandchild for a mere sum of N50,000. The shocking revelation came to light during a press briefing conducted by the Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo.

According to the commissioner, the rescue operation was initiated based on consistent intelligence reports and surveillance spanning almost a month. The operation was prompted by a report filed by Ijeoma Nwosu, the daughter of Oluchukwu, who alleged that her mother had forcibly sold her baby soon after the child’s birth and refused to disclose the baby’s whereabouts.

Upon receiving the distressing report, the ministry swiftly took action, leading to the apprehension of four suspects involved in this heart-rending crime. These individuals are set to be handed over to the police for thorough questioning and further investigation.

During her confession, Oluchukwu, pleading for mercy, revealed that the baby in question would have been her daughter’s third child born out of wedlock, and the family was struggling in abject poverty. Their dire financial situation left them with no resources to feed and care for themselves, let alone the children. Desperate and overwhelmed by circumstances, Oluchukwu entered into an agreement with a man named Tochukwu Asiegbu, who agreed to pay her N50,000 for the baby.

Asiegbu, identified as the middleman in the transaction, disclosed that he made a profit of N30,000 from the sale. His role was solely to introduce Oluchukwu to the buyer, Evelyn Egwuatu, from Uruagu in Nnewi. Shockingly, Egwuatu had paid N200,000 to obtain the baby from another intermediary, Ebelechukwu Uba, originally from Ebonyi but residing in Anambra. Uba, however, denied being the mastermind behind the operation, stating that Asiegbu and Oluchukwu had made the decision to sell the baby to Egwuatu.

This disturbing incident sheds light on the harsh realities faced by families living in poverty, pushing them to make unthinkable decisions in a desperate attempt to survive. The case also exposes the deeply rooted issues of child trafficking and exploitation that persist in society, calling for urgent and comprehensive efforts to eradicate such heinous crimes.
