The Christmas Eve assaults on communities across three local government areas in Plateau State sparked widespread outrage on Tuesday.President Bola Tinubu, through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, strongly condemned the attacks. He ordered an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators, assuring Nigerians that those responsible for the tragic incidents would be brought to justice.Expressing heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Plateau State, Tinubu vowed that those spreading death and suffering would not evade accountability.Responding to the President’s call to apprehend the attackers, Kefas Mallai, Chairman of Community Peace Observers in the Bokkos Local Government Area, reported to one of our correspondents that more than 150 individuals fell victim to the gunmen.Mallai also highlighted ongoing assaults in several villages, resulting in the displacement of over 10,000 people. These acts of violence drew strong condemnation from various quarters, including northern governors and Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The attacks took place on Sunday when armed assailants targeted Ndun, Ngyong, Murfet, Makundary, Tamiso, Chiang, Tahore, Gawarba, Dares, Meyenga, Darwat, and Butura Kampani villages in the Barkin Ladi, Mangu, and Bokkos areas of the state. The attackers set homes ablaze and ruthlessly attacked residents. In an interview with The PUNCH on Tuesday, Mallai, the Chairman of Community Peace Observers in Bokkos, stated, “The attacks claimed over 150 lives. In Bokkos town alone, more than 10,000 individuals are seeking shelter in churches, mosques, schools, and private residences.”Although our reporter couldn’t verify the death toll provided by Mallai through eyewitness accounts, the state government reported over 115 fatalities, while the police indicated a death toll of 96.
