President Bola Tinubu has taken swift action by suspending Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, amid an ongoing investigation into financial irregularities. The investigation pertains to the alleged transfer of N585.189 million into a private account, initially intended to aid vulnerable individuals in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states.Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, emphasized that appropriate measures would follow the conclusion of the investigation.According to reports from Drivetvnews, funds earmarked for supporting vulnerable populations were reportedly diverted into a private account based on instructions from Minister Betta Edu. This instruction was documented in correspondence to the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation. In a statement released by the President and signed by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, it was stressed that President Tinubu is committed to upholding integrity, transparency, and accountability in managing Nigeria’s resources. Consequently, the President has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the financial transactions involving the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and its related agencies.Dr. Betta Edu, following her suspension, has been instructed to transfer her responsibilities to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. Moreover, she has been strongly urged to fully cooperate with the investigating authorities during the ongoing probe.Furthermore, the President has initiated a panel led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance. This panel’s primary objective is to conduct an extensive assessment of the financial framework supporting social investment programs. The ultimate aim is to reform pertinent institutions and programs, thereby addressing systemic weaknesses and restoring public confidence in these initiatives. All directives from the President are to be immediately enacted.
