Tragedy struck on Tuesday near Foursquare Church, Ajebo, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, as five individuals lost their lives and 12 others sustained injuries in a harrowing accident. The incident, which occurred around 1:07 pm, involved a Mazda bus bearing registration number SMK685YG and a Howo truck registered as ZE-1210G.According to reports, the driver of the Mazda bus succumbed to fatigue, leading to a loss of control, resulting in a collision with the moving truck.Florence Okpe, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the incident in a statement released to the press. The injured victims have been rushed to Victory Hospital, Ogere Remo, in the Ikenne Local Government Area for medical attention, while the deceased have been transferred to FOS Morgue, Ipara Remo.In her statement, Okpe disclosed, “The fatal crash occurred at about 1307 hrs on Lagos-Ibadan expressway. A total of 18 persons were involved, comprising 10 male adults and 8 female adults. 12 people were injured (10 male and 2 female), and unfortunately, 5 persons were recorded dead from the crash (4 male and 1 female adult).”She attributed the crash to factors such as a tire burst, excessive speed, and driver fatigue, emphasizing the importance of drivers ensuring they are well-rested and equipped with good tires.Anthony Uga, the Sector Commander of FRSC Ogun Sector Command, echoed similar sentiments, urging motorists to prioritize safety over speed and advising drivers to take regular breaks to combat fatigue. He also encouraged passengers to be vigilant and report any signs of fatigue or recklessness exhibited by drivers.Uga extended his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for strength during this difficult time.
