Late on Monday evening, tragedy struck when a passenger boat capsized along the Ibeshe-Ikorodu channel, resulting in the loss of three lives while 11 individuals were fortunate enough to be rescued.Eyewitnesses recounted that the incident unfolded around 7:30 pm, triggered by a sudden mechanical failure of the boat.Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), verified the occurrence, stating, “The agency promptly responded to distress signals regarding a passenger boat departing from Addax Jetty at approximately 7 pm.”Upon arrival at the scene, responders discovered that the passenger ferry, named Oluwaseyifunmi, carrying 14 individuals, had capsized due to a suspected mechanical malfunction, quickly submerging after departure from the terminal.”A coordinated effort involving water guards, the search and rescue team of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), and agency personnel was mobilized,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu explained. “This led to the successful rescue of 11 survivors, who were promptly transported to the Ibeshe Ferry Terminal for medical attention.”Tragically, three passengers were retrieved deceased, prompting the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) to oversee the transfer of their remains to the state mortuary.Reports indicate that LASWA and relevant authorities have initiated investigations to ascertain the root cause of the unfortunate incident.
