Samuel Shegun, aged 32, has been apprehended by the police in Jigawa State on suspicion of murdering his biological mother.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP. AT Abdullahi, made this announcement while presenting the suspect at the command’s headquarters in Dutse, the state capital.
According to a report by Drivetvnews, law enforcement officers found the lifeless body of Esther Adekanla, a 47-year-old woman commonly known as Hadiza Nakowa, in her residence in Dutse town.
Following an investigation, detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse arrested Samuel Shegun, who resides opposite Awajil Filling Station in Dutse, in connection with the brutal killing of his mother, Esther Adekanla, and the injury of his sister.
The suspect was traced and apprehended through the tracking of the deceased’s phone number, which implicated him in the crime.
During interrogation, the suspect revealed that on February 12, 2024, around 10:00 PM, his mother returned home from her food vending activities and engaged in a physical altercation with a young girl named Christiana Michael, during which she brandished a knife. In an attempt to intervene and protect the girl, he inadvertently caused his mother to inflict a fatal injury upon herself with the knife.
Realizing the severity of the situation and wishing to evade law enforcement, the suspect admitted to stealing his mother’s phones, locking the house, and fleeing the area.
CP. Abdullahi stated that the injured girl, Christiana Michael, is currently undergoing medical treatment for her injuries and is showing signs of recovery. She corroborated the suspect’s statement to the police, confirming that he was solely responsible for the offense.
The suspect will be charged and prosecuted in court.
