Commercial drivers at the Ikeja under bridge garage in Lagos State have expressed frustration over what they perceive as the sudden eviction notice issued by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
According to Drivetvnews reports, the incident unfolded around 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, with government agents and armed personnel seen ushering drivers out of the garage. Traders selling goods near the park were also observed relocating.
Some drivers, including Emeka and Oladayo, lamented the lack of prior notice from the NSCDC and the Lagos State Task Force. Emeka noted the challenges commuters would face due to the abrupt eviction, while Oladayo highlighted the absence of alternative parking spaces.
In response, Raheem Gbadeyanka, Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Taskforce, labeled the park illegal, citing the deterioration of the once-beautiful area due to commercial vehicle activities. He emphasized that the eviction was not carried out by the task force but stressed the illegality of the park.
NSCDC spokesperson Abolurin Oluwaseun defended the action, stating it was a collaborative effort with the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation to alleviate traffic congestion and ensure smooth vehicle flow. He explained that officers were strategically positioned to facilitate safe transportation operations.
