Experts warn about eating too much of the latest social media trend, milky doughnuts, could increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases due to their high sugar, fat, and calorie content, lacking nutritional value. Drivetvnews Healthwise highlighted the need for caution, especially for those with food allergies, when following social media food trends. The trend, originating on TikTok and spreading to platforms like X, has seen a surge in popularity, with online vendors capitalizing on its appeal. However, these snacks are often sold without proper dietary information labels. Experts advise against blindly embracing social media food trends, citing the lack of verification by food scientists. Non-communicable diseases account for a significant portion of global deaths, with unhealthy diets being a major risk factor. Nigeria, in particular, faces challenges in meeting diet-related NCD targets, with obesity and diabetes rates on the rise. Consultant dietician Charles Oguikpe cautioned against the nutritional imbalance of milky doughnuts, emphasizing their high-calorie content and lack of essential nutrients. While they contain some nutrients from milk, the negatives outweigh the positives due to their high sugar and fat content. Oguikpe, also a spokesperson for the Association of Nigerian Dieticians, Lagos State, stressed the health risks associated with consuming such snacks regularly.
