Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso was thrown into chaos on Tuesday morning as students took to the streets in protest following the alleged killing of a fellow student. The victim, reportedly celebrating his graduation the previous day, fell victim to an altercation involving the Nigerian Police Force.
The protest began with students barricading the institution’s gates, causing a temporary delay in the commencement of the 16th convocation ceremonies.
Drivetvnews Reports suggest that the tragic incident occurred during a celebration at a club in the Under-G area, where an argument escalated into violence, resulting in the fatal shooting of the student. The alleged perpetrator, identified as a police officer named Saheed, was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the incident.
While some students allege that Saheed had a history of causing trouble in the area, police authorities deny that their officers fired the fatal shot. According to their account, they responded to a call reporting a clash between rival groups at a hotel, only to find the victim already wounded upon arrival.
Prior to the convocation, there were sightings of suspected cult members armed with weapons, prompting police intervention to prevent a potential altercation.
Despite the unrest, the convocation ceremony proceeded as planned, with notable dignitaries such as the Soun of Ogbomoso and representatives from the state government and the university administration in attendance.
Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Rasaq Olatunde ROM Kalilu addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of unity and peace within the university community.
The incident casts a shadow over what should have been a joyous occasion, highlighting the need for improved security measures and dialogue between students and law enforcement to prevent such tragedies in the future.
