A man, identified as Azeez, reportedly jumped into the lagoon in Lagos and drowned while trying to escape arrest following accusations of stealing bags of cement.
Confirming the incident, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos Police Command, informed NAN on Sunday.
Hundeyin stated that the director of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) in Lagos Central reported the incident to the Ikoyi Police Division on Friday around 12:20 pm.
The report detailed that around 10:45 am on Friday, there was a commotion at the Lekki/Ikoyi Link Bridge, leading to a crowd gathering by the waterside, where the lifeless body of a man, later identified as Azeez, was found.
According to Hundeyin, it was revealed that Azeez jumped into the lagoon to escape Elijah Amos, a cement seller, who was pursuing him for allegedly stealing bags of cement.
Police officers visited the scene, and the deceased’s body was taken to the Mainland General Hospital Mortuary, Yaba, for autopsy and preservation.
