Tragedy struck on Friday night as a 33,000 liters petrol-laden tanker burst into flames, claiming the lives of two individuals. The incident occurred at the Ijesha end of the Cele Link Bridge in Surulere, Lagos.
Eyewitness Mr. Jide Alabi reported that the incident took place around 11:12 p.m. on Friday. The tanker driver lost control while navigating the roundabout to ascend the bridge, causing the product to spill and ignite into a massive fireball, engulfing the surroundings.
Ojueko Sharon, a staff member of the Lagos Ministry of Transport, confirmed the fire incident, stating that the tanker toppled over.
Prompt action from the Isolo and Bolade Fire Stations of the Lagos State Rescue and Service prevented further escalation.
Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, noted that the agency responded promptly to the distress call and successfully extinguished the fire. She expressed regret that two male individuals were found deceased, their bodies tragically burnt beyond recognition. The bodies were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for necessary procedures.
Efforts are currently underway to clear the wreckage of the vehicles involved, ensuring unhindered traffic flow and facilitating thorough investigative procedures.
