Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed concern over the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on local government autonomy, stating that it has led to widespread confusion. In response, Governor Makinde convened an emergency consultative meeting where he announced the establishment of technical and legal committees tasked with reviewing the Supreme Court’s decision.
The Supreme Court’s directive mandates that monthly allocations from the federation account be directly disbursed to local government coffers, bypassing state government control. Governor Makinde, addressing stakeholders including members of the Oyo State chapter of the Association of Local Government Administration (ALGON), Attorney General Barrister Abiodun Aikomo, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters Otunba Ademola Ojo, and representatives from various unions, emphasized the need for clarity amidst the legal and operational challenges posed by the ruling.
Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of finding a sustainable solution that aligns with constitutional provisions while ensuring transparency and effective governance. He acknowledged the existing confusion caused by overlapping judicial interpretations, citing instances where conflicting directives had led to administrative challenges.
Moreover, Governor Makinde reiterated Oyo State’s commitment to local governance, highlighting ongoing efforts to conduct elections and avoid caretaker committees. He stressed the state’s autonomy in decision-making, asserting that local policies should reflect local needs and aspirations rather than federal mandates.
In a subsequent press briefing, Attorney General Barrister Abiodun Aikomo outlined the committees’ objectives, which include developing frameworks for implementing financial autonomy within the stipulated timeframe of four to six weeks. The committees are expected to propose actionable recommendations that balance legal compliance with practical considerations for effective governance.
The governor’s proactive approach underscores Oyo State’s determination to navigate the complexities of local government autonomy, aiming to mitigate confusion and promote sustainable development strategies tailored to local realities.
