Veteran Nollywood actress Remi Surutu has revealed that she faced intense online backlash, including hurtful accusations linking her daughter’s death to her political support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 elections.

Speaking at the launch of EKO57, a pro-Tinubu support group in Lagos, the actress recounted how social media users targeted her during the campaign period. She said some critics went as far as blaming her for the loss of her daughter, an allegation she described as deeply painful but one she chose to ignore.

Despite the attacks, Surutu maintained that she remained committed to her political stance and exercised her right to vote. She encouraged Nigerians not to be intimidated or misled when making political decisions, stressing the importance of standing by one’s convictions.

The actress also spoke about the challenges of political loyalty, noting that some individuals only show support when it benefits them. She defended her continued backing of Tinubu, insisting she would not withdraw her support regardless of criticism.

Surutu lost her daughter, Ayomikun, in 2017 due to complications from Sickle Cell Disease. Reflecting on the tragedy, she has previously expressed gratitude for the strength to cope with the loss and has continued to focus on her family and career.

The event also drew other Nollywood figures, including Yomi Fash-Lanso, Ayo Adesanya, and Lege Miami.

Surutu emphasised that online criticism and threats would not deter her from participating in politics or expressing her views, reaffirming her determination to remain active in both her professional and civic life.
