Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has defended his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying he acted ahead of other governors who have since followed the same path.

Speaking during an interview with TVC on Friday, Eno said his defection was a carefully considered decision driven by the need to secure greater opportunities and resources for Akwa Ibom State.

According to the governor, improved federal allocations and access to development funds under the current administration influenced his move, stressing that his priority remains delivering tangible benefits to the people.

Eno also cited the presence of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, an indigene of Akwa Ibom, in the APC, saying remaining in a different political party could have created unnecessary rivalry and disrupted the peace and stability of the state.

He revealed that he foresaw challenges within the PDP, particularly regarding his chances of securing the party’s endorsement for a second-term bid, adding that many who criticised his decision have now also left the opposition party.

Describing himself as a political pathfinder, Eno said, “I came like John the Baptist to prepare the way for you,” noting that several governors who initially questioned his defection have since joined the APC.

The governor maintained that leadership is measured by sound judgment and long-term outcomes, insisting that recent political developments have validated his decision.

Eno further emphasised that preserving peace in Akwa Ibom remains his top priority, warning that political conflicts can easily spiral beyond control if not properly managed.

He also highlighted his cordial working relationship with Senate President Akpabio, saying both leaders collaborate in the interest of the state’s development despite holding different responsibilities.

The governor concluded by reaffirming his respect for all former governors of Akwa Ibom, stating that he has never publicly insulted any of his predecessors and believes mutual respect is essential for effective leadership.
