The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports claiming that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, ordered officers to “shoot on sight” anyone found carrying illegal firearms.
In a statement issued on Saturday titled “Clarification: What the Inspector-General of Police Actually Said in Makurdi,” the Force said the IGP’s remarks at a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Benue State, had been widely misinterpreted.
According to the police, Disu did not issue any blanket order authorising officers to shoot individuals carrying illegal weapons. Instead, he reminded personnel that they had been briefed on Force Order 237, which outlines the legal and operational conditions governing the use of firearms by police officers.
The statement explained that the IGP simply emphasised that officers are familiar with the rules of engagement and know the lawful circumstances under which they may deploy their weapons while carrying out their duties.
The Force also noted that the police chief reiterated that illegal possession of firearms and violent crimes would not be tolerated across the country.
The clarification followed widespread reports alleging that Disu had instructed officers nationwide to immediately shoot anyone found with illegal firearms as part of renewed efforts to address insecurity, particularly in Benue State.
However, the police stressed that the Inspector-General’s comments were limited to reinforcing compliance with Force Order 237 and existing rules of engagement, maintaining that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to performing its constitutional responsibilities within the limits of the law.
