The National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, has challenged the Osun State Government’s decision to suspend the union’s operations across motor parks in the state.
Drivetvnews gathered that Governor Ademola Adeleke had on Thursday ordered the immediate suspension of all NURTW activities following a meeting of the Osun State Security Council, citing the need to restore order and improve security. The directive also included the suspension of levy collection in motor parks and instructed security agencies to arrest anyone operating as a union official.
Responding during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, MC Oluomo, represented by the union’s Deputy National President, Aliyu Ore, argued that no state governor has the constitutional authority to suspend the activities of the NURTW.
He maintained that the union is a legally recognised national body established by law and noted that it had previously secured favourable court judgments in similar disputes involving state governments.
MC Oluomo further disclosed that the union has been experiencing a prolonged leadership crisis in Osun State, leaving it without a stable leadership structure in recent weeks.
According to him, the NURTW national leadership has resolved to establish a caretaker committee to oversee the union’s affairs in Osun ahead of the state’s governorship election scheduled for August 15.
The newly announced caretaker committee will be headed by Kazeem Oyewale as chairman, with Sunday Oludare serving as secretary and Lukman Ahmed as treasurer, alongside four other members.
He said the caretaker committee would manage the union’s activities in Osun until the internal leadership dispute is fully resolved.
