In Amassoma, a community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, a tragic incident has shaken residents and the student community at Niger Delta University (NDU). Francis Palowei, a final year student, met a grim fate allegedly over a dispute involving a ₦150 levy at a local sand dump, a popular hangout spot for students.

According to a local resident who spoke anonymously to Drivetvnews, the sand dump serves as a gathering place for students to relax and socialize, often engaging in recreational activities like climbing to its summit for fun. Recently, local youths began imposing a fee of ₦150 on students who wished to climb the dump.

On the evening of the incident, Palowei and his friends attempted to ascend the dump but were confronted by youths demanding ₦500 instead of the usual ₦150. This sparked a heated argument, escalating quickly as the youths called for reinforcements, reportedly including a notorious cultist. Tragically, the confrontation turned fatal, resulting in Palowei’s death.

Palowei hailed from Obrigbene town in Ekeremor Local Government Area and was described as a promising young man with a bright future ahead of him. His untimely and senseless death has plunged his family, friends, and the university community into deep mourning. It’s notable that Palowei’s father holds a senior position in the police force, adding a poignant layer to the tragedy.

Ndoni Igezi, the Public Relations Officer at Niger Delta University, expressed deep regret over the incident, labeling it as unfortunate. He assured the public that the university and authorities are cooperating with the police to manage the situation and prevent any further escalation of tensions.

Further clarification revealed that although the sand dump is privately owned and the owner does not charge any fees, local youths have been collecting the ₦150 levy from students wishing to use the dump for recreational purposes.

ASP Musa Muhammed, the police spokesman in Bayelsa State, confirmed the incident in Yenagoa, the state capital. He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police has deployed additional security personnel to Amassoma to restore peace and order. A manhunt is also underway to apprehend the suspected perpetrators of this tragic crime.
