The Defence Headquarters has issued a warning regarding the upcoming nationwide protest, suggesting that it is designed to mirror the violent and unresolved demonstrations that have occurred in Kenya.
Maj Gen Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, delivered this warning during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday. He disclosed that intelligence indicates the protest could be overtaken by malevolent actors, potentially leading to violence and instability.
He remarked, “The purpose of this protest appears to be to emulate the situation in Kenya, where the protests have been marked by violence and remain unresolved at this time.”
He further explained, “Our intelligence suggests that certain malicious elements intend to seize control of this protest and escalate it into violence. Should this occur, we anticipate a level of chaos similar to what we have observed elsewhere. We must recognize the potential consequences and appreciate the current state of peace we have.”
Maj Gen Buba described the anticipated violence as a precursor to anarchy, asserting that the Armed Forces will not tolerate such disorder. Drawing from past experiences, particularly during ECOMOG operations and peacekeeping missions, he emphasized the military’s commitment to preventing anarchy.
He concluded, “Citizens should visit IDP camps to witness the consequences of war firsthand. It is crucial to maintain peace and allow the federal government to address and resolve current issues effectively, fostering a stable environment for the nation’s progress.”
