The police are preparing to take legal action against a young man who, last Friday, threatened to commit suicide as a means to demand the resignation of President Bola Tinubu.
Officers from the Adamawa State Police Command arrested the individual on Saturday night after he climbed a 33kv high-tension pole in the Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area. He stated that he would only come down if the President stepped down from office.
SP Suleiman Nguruje, the Public Relations Officer for the command, shared with *PUNCH Metro* on Sunday evening that the man’s identity is being kept confidential. He was rescued Saturday night and is currently in custody in the state’s capital.
“The command will present him to the public today (Monday) for attempting suicide. Attempting suicide is a criminal offense under our laws, and we plan to charge him in court,” Nguruje explained.
He also stressed that protecting lives and property is the duty of the police, and that anyone threatening their own life will face legal action.
The incident occurred on Friday morning, coinciding with the market day in Mayo Belwa. The young man climbed the 33kv power line along the Yola-Jalingo highway, announcing that he would not come down until the President vacated office.
Reports reveal that the police, with the help of local residents, were able to convince him to come down on Saturday night.
At present, the man is being held in protective custody at the Criminal Investigating Department of the Adamawa Police Command.
While the individual aimed to pressure President Tinubu to resign, the legal focus will now shift to addressing his alleged attempt to take his own life.
