Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has suggested that electricity prices may decrease soon, as part of the government’s efforts to improve the nation’s power infrastructure.
Despite rising electricity tariffs, Adelabu highlighted that grid power remains more economical than relying on petrol or diesel generators, particularly with current fuel prices. He made these remarks during a visit from Tosin Adeyanju, the Executive Secretary of the National Lottery Trust Fund.
Adelabu also noted that Nigeria still offers lower electricity rates compared to neighboring countries like Togo, Mali, and Niger. However, he acknowledged that many Nigerians find the costs burdensome due to low income levels.
Earlier in the year, a tariff hike sparked public discontent. Band A consumers, who receive at least 20 hours of electricity daily, now pay N209.5 per kilowatt-hour.
Nevertheless, Adelabu assured the public that ongoing efforts to boost power generation and distribution would eventually lead to lower electricity costs.
