Nura Mas’ud, a 26-year-old man from Jigawa State, has been arrested for allegedly setting his 60-year-old grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, on fire, resulting in her tragic death. The incident occurred on October 8, 2024, in Mu’azu village, Dan Gwanki ward, Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area ¹ ².
According to DSP Lawan Adam, the Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Police Command, Mas’ud poured gasoline on his grandmother and set her ablaze after she expressed concerns about his physical appearance and health, which he felt was unwarranted ¹ ². The suspect had reportedly warned her several times to stop, but she refused.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Mas’ud has a history of mental illness and has been receiving treatment at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital ¹ ². The police quickly arrested and detained him, and he was later taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
During interrogation, Mas’ud admitted to committing the crime, citing his grandmother’s comments about his appearance and health as the motive ¹ ². The State Commissioner of Police, A.T. Abdullahi, has directed a thorough investigation and prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others.
The victim was rushed to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, and her body was released to her relatives for burial according to Islamic rites ¹ ².
