The Lagos State Police Command confirmed a fatal incident involving a man who jumped into a canal in the Ipaja area while evading arrest. According to SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the incident occurred on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Mosan Okunola, Ipaja.
The man, a motorcycle passenger traveling against traffic, jumped off and ran through a nearby tipper garage after spotting police. Eyewitnesses saw him emptying his pockets while running toward the canal, despite warnings. The police stopped their vehicle, approached the canal and waited briefly, assuming he escaped when he didn’t resurface ¹.
Hundeyin clarified that claims of a police chase were inaccurate. The command remains committed to professionalism under CP Olanrewaju Ishola’s leadership. Hundeyin expressed condolences to the deceased’s family.
Similar incidents have occurred in Lagos. In April 2024, a man identified as Azeez drowned after jumping into the Lagos Lagoon while fleeing arrest for alleged cement theft ¹.
