Lagos Police have arrested a self-proclaimed “Obi of Lagos” and three accomplices over a planned ₦1.5 billion palace unveiling. Authorities sealed the venue and launched investigations to prevent a breach of peace.

The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a man who allegedly styled himself as the “Obi of Lagos” alongside three collaborators, halting plans to inaugurate a purported ₦1.5 billion palace.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi B. Oluseyi, the Command explained that the suspects were picked up in Ikeja following intelligence reports about an unlawful installation ceremony.

The principal suspect was identified as 65-year-old Engr. Chibuike Azubike from Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State. He was arrested with Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65) and Mr. Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41).

Police said the group had concluded arrangements to unveil a model of the “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin, on Saturday, 13 September 2025. The venue was sealed to prevent any breach of public peace and protect unsuspecting attendees.

Security teams, including the Eko Strike Force and other tactical squads, were deployed to ensure the planned event did not hold and that order was maintained in the area.

According to the Command, the suspects remain in custody while investigations are ongoing and will be arraigned in court after the probe.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, advised residents to be wary of impostors seeking to exploit cultural and traditional institutions. He stressed that such acts contravene Lagos State laws and threaten public order, warning that the police will continue to act firmly against any person or group undermining legality and the state’s integrity.
