The Rivers State Police Command has taken a 35-year-old suspect, Innocent Chigozie, into custody for allegedly leading a violent cult group that has been terrorizing farmlands along Uzo Afor Road in Okahia Community, Elele, within Etche Local Government Area.
Chigozie was arrested on January 30, 2025, at approximately 6:30 a.m. during a carefully planned intelligence operation conducted by the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU).
According to SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the command’s spokesperson, the suspect admitted to owning the seized weapons, which included an automatic pump-action shotgun and two live cartridges.
“This gang has instilled fear in the community, disrupting peace and security. Last year, they engaged law enforcement in a gunfight but were forced to retreat. However, through intelligence efforts, officers located and apprehended Innocent Chigozie at his hideout on January 30,” Iringe-Koko stated.
Currently, Chigozie remains in police custody along with the recovered weapons as authorities continue efforts to track down other members of the gang and retrieve additional firearms.
Iringe-Koko emphasized that the arrest represents a significant victory in the police command’s ongoing battle against cult-related violence and armed robbery. She also reaffirmed the commitment of law enforcement to ensuring the safety and stability of the state.
