At least 14 people lost their lives in a fatal road accident on the Lapai-Agaie-Bida Federal Highway, according to Kumar Tsukwam, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State.
In an official statement, Tsukwam attributed the crash to excessive speed and unsafe overtaking.
The accident took place at 10:59 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2025, between Kusobogi and Nami. It involved a Toyota Hiace bus traveling from Minna to Agaie and a DAF tanker heading from Lagos to Kaduna.
According to the FRSC report, the driver of the Toyota Hiace attempted to overtake another vehicle at high speed but collided head-on with the oncoming tanker.
“The impact was devastating, claiming the lives of 14 passengers on the spot. The victims included five women, one young boy, and eight men. Six other male passengers suffered severe injuries and were immediately taken to the General Hospital in Lapai for urgent medical care,” the statement read.
Emergency personnel transported the injured to the hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were placed in the morgue.
Tsukwam urged drivers to follow traffic regulations, avoid reckless driving, and ensure proper vehicle maintenance to prevent similar accidents.
