The Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended a suspect, Safiyanu Dalhatu, for allegedly assaulting his 40-year-old mother, Salma Abdullahi, with a pestle, leading to her death.
According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Wakili, members of the Peace and Security Committee in the Abujan Kwata area of Bauchi reported the incident to the A’ Divisional Police Headquarters on February 24, 2025.
Wakili stated that Dalhatu allegedly attacked his mother using a heavy pestle, causing severe fractures to both her hands and inflicting multiple injuries on her body.
Upon receiving the report, the police took immediate action.
“The Divisional Police Officer, CSP Abdullahi Muazu, swiftly led a team of detectives to the scene and arranged for the victim to be taken to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for urgent medical care. Unfortunately, a doctor later confirmed her death,” the statement read.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the case, and the pestle used in the attack has been recovered as evidence.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the assault stemmed from a dispute between the suspect and his biological mother,” the statement added.
The Criminal Investigation Department, under the directive of Commissioner of Police CP Auwal Musa Muhammad, is handling the investigation. Once concluded, the suspect will face prosecution in court.
