The Oyo State Government has dismissed rumors circulating about the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, at the age of 89.
Addressing the speculation, the Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Wasiu Olatunbosun, reassured the public that the monarch is alive and in good health.
He stated, “Yes, the Olubadan is alive, hale, and hearty. I spoke with one of his sons, Prince Olaseke Owolabi Olakulehin, who represented the family at the coronation committee.”
Similarly, the Chief Press Secretary to the Olubadan, Gbenga Ayoade, confirmed that Oba Olakulehin is in good health.
Ayoade noted that he left the palace around 8 p.m. and saw no signs of any crisis. “When I later contacted the palace, I was informed that Baba is hale and healthy,” he said.
Dismissing claims that the monarch had been flown out of Ibadan for medical treatment, Ayoade clarified, “Baba is still in Ibadan. He was not taken anywhere. He is doing very fine.”
Oba Olakulehin, born on July 5, 1935, ascended the throne after receiving his staff of office from Governor Seyi Makinde on July 12, 2024. His coronation followed the passing of the 42nd Olubadan, Oba Moshood Olalekan Balogun, Alli Okumade II, who died on March 14 at the age of 81.
