The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed that 11 people were killed and six villages were destroyed in an attack by Lakurawa militants in Arewa Local Government Area.
The assault, which took place on Sunday, was reportedly carried out in retaliation for the killing of a militant leader, Maigemu, by security forces.
According to local sources who spoke anonymously for security reasons, the attackers invaded Birnin Dede and nearby communities, setting houses on fire. One village was left untouched due to the presence of military personnel.
Confirming the incident on Monday, Kebbi State police spokesperson Nafiu Abubakar stated that initial reports suggested 13 fatalities and the destruction of eight villages. However, further investigations confirmed 11 deaths and two critically injured victims.
“The attack occurred on Sunday, targeting six villages. Eleven people were killed, and two others sustained critical injuries. We are tracking the perpetrators and are committed to bringing them to justice,” Abubakar said.
Chairman of Arewa Local Government Council, Alhaji Sani Aliyu, reported that the victims had been laid to rest following Islamic burial rites. He emphasized that the attack was a response to the recent security operation that led to the elimination of Maigemu, a known bandit leader, as part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in the region.
Security forces have since intensified efforts to capture those responsible and restore peace in the affected communities.
