A disturbing incident in the Angwan-Kaje area of Maitumbi, Minna, Chanchaga Local Government Area of Niger State, has led to the death of a man identified as Sani, who was allegedly shot by a security officer believed to be intoxicated.
According to reports, Sani was unarmed and not a threat when the officer opened fire. The incident took place around 3 a.m. on Monday.
Eyewitnesses claimed the officer, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, fired shots indiscriminately. A local tea vendor, known as Mai Shayi, was also targeted but managed to escape unharmed.
“The officer shot him while he was asleep. He also attempted to shoot Mai Shayi, but he ran for his life. Bullet casings were found at the scene,” a witness said.
A source described Sani as a peaceful person with no links to criminal activities.
“We knew him well. He was respectful and had no connections to any gang. He was a good person,” the source added.
Confirming the incident, Wasiu Abiodun, the Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Police Command, stated that authorities had received the report.
“The Command was informed about the alleged shooting, which reportedly took place around 3 a.m. on March 10, 2025, in the Angwan-Kaje area of Maitumbi, Minna.
“The Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation to identify those responsible and take necessary action.
“Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues,” he said.
