The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has encouraged Nigerians to embrace tolerance, understanding, and good neighborliness as essential values for fostering national unity and progress.

In his Eid-el-Fitr message on Sunday, the monarch called for a renewed commitment to both the Creator and the welfare of humanity. He urged Nigerians to appreciate the gift of life and cultivate virtues such as patience and contentment.

A statement from his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, in Ibadan highlighted the monarch’s message that true obedience to Allah is demonstrated through complete submission to His will, which is the central theme of the festival.

“If love truly resides in our hearts, governance will be more effective, electoral reforms will be easier to implement, public funds will be used responsibly for the greater good, and leaders will prioritize the well-being of those they serve.

“This is the essence of the festival, a lesson I encourage all Nigerians, and indeed all humanity, to embrace at this time,” the statement read.

The Alaafin emphasized the importance of selfless love that prioritizes the needs of others over personal interests.

“Love that considers others first, values collective well-being above individual gain, and seeks to uplift and empower is what we should strive for,” he stated.

Addressing the nation’s economic challenges, Oba Owoade called on Muslims to extend their generosity beyond their immediate circles during the holy season.

“The timing of this year’s festival is particularly significant, given the ongoing economic recession and its impact on millions of Nigerians.

“This situation makes it imperative for Muslims to look beyond their immediate environment and extend support to those in greater need,” he said.

The monarch also appealed to philanthropists to assist the less privileged in society.

“The key lessons of Eid-el-Fitr are clear: by caring for the underprivileged, we recognize the importance of our neighbors’ well-being alongside our own. Sharing our wealth and resources honors the Almighty, who has provided for us,” he noted.

He further stressed the need to focus on the true meaning of Eid-el-Fitr and the spirit of sacrifice it embodies.

“With millions of Nigerians displaced within their own country, the significance of this year’s celebration cannot be overstated,” Oba Owoade said.

In conclusion, he urged people to extend their acts of love and generosity beyond their close circles.

“This occasion should not be limited to festivities alone; it should inspire us to share our love and resources with not just our relatives and friends, but also with displaced persons, the elderly, orphans, and those with special needs,” he said.
