A young Igala graduate, John Johnson, was tragically killed by suspected herdsmen in Zaina, near Angwar Hakimi, Orozo, in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Johnson had been attending a Boys’ Brigade camp when the attack occurred on March 29, 2025. His death came just a year after losing his father to a prolonged illness.
Amadu Zachariah, the Chief of Igala in Orozo, confirmed the incident and expressed deep regret over the brutal killing. He also noted that security agencies had not yet arrested those responsible.
Zachariah explained that the Boys’ Brigade had organized a camp in Zaina but had to relocate to a nearby church due to an impending storm. Later, two group leaders returned to retrieve their belongings and were ambushed by suspected herdsmen. One managed to escape, while Johnson was killed.
“That night, as rain threatened, they moved the children to a church for safety. After ensuring their safety, two group leaders went back to collect their belongings. On their way, they were ambushed by individuals believed to be Fulani herdsmen. One escaped, but unfortunately, John Johnson lost his life,” he recounted.
Villagers rushed to the scene after learning of the attack, but Johnson had already been killed. Authorities were informed, and their investigation revealed that the Fulani herdsmen living in the area had fled. Community leaders of the Fulani group assured officials they would assist in identifying the attackers, but no arrests have been made so far.
“The incident was reported to the police, who found that the Fulani herdsmen in the area had suddenly left,” Zachariah said. “Their leaders promised to help locate those responsible, but no arrests have been made yet.”
The tragic killing has left Johnson’s family and community in mourning. They are now demanding justice and urging authorities to take swift action.
Meanwhile, Fortress Ministry in Abuja officially confirmed his passing in a statement signed by Rev. Samuel Ikani. The statement described Johnson as a dedicated believer who stood firm in his faith.
“With deep sorrow but unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, Fortress Ministry Abuja announces the passing of our beloved brother, Bro. Johnson Enyo-Ojo John, who transitioned to glory on March 29, 2025,” the statement read. “He was steadfast in his faith and commitment to the Gospel. His life was one of devotion, service, and love for God, inspiring those who knew him. Though we grieve his loss, we take comfort in Scripture: ‘Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.’ – Psalm 116:15.”
The church also urged members to pray for Johnson’s grieving mother and siblings, asking for strength and divine comfort in this difficult time.
Efforts to obtain a statement from the FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls or messages seeking her reaction to the incident.
